Artist Statement
Wendy Kendrick - collage/mixed media/teaching artist

img_7056Sometimes while looking at an old piece of my work I experience a moment of "what if?". Typically during this time my mind wanders to a place other than where I think I should be focused at that given moment in time. Most times the current piece of work is set aside so that the birthing of a new idea can take place. Usually this birthing requires me to "push past my comfort zone" to create something that has been swirling around in my mind sub-consciously.

A lot of times the urge to "push past" is accompanied by some fear of messing up what my physical eyes see as a fine piece of work. The "pushing past the comfort zone" I do believe is my spirit yelling out "don't become boring for the sake of safety, dare to be new."

Discovery and artmaking go hand in hand!

Artist Bio

A resident of Columbus, Ohio, Wendy Kendrick is known as a collage/mixed- media artist. Although she has resided in Columbus for over 16 years, it is often the place of her birth in Kentucky, which she finds herself retreating to for inspiration. "There's something about sitting on the front porch with my 80-something year old aunt and enjoying the slow pace and loving people of Georgetown, Kentucky."

Kendrick received her B.A. in Visual Studies from Dartmouth College and has furthered her studies through additional coursework taken at the Dayton Art Institute and Columbus College of Art and Design. Her work has been featured at the King Arts Complex, Sinclair Community College, Columbus Museum of Art Docent Exhibition, and the Cox Fine Arts Center at the Ohio Expo, the Ohio Craft Museum and the Rhodes Office Tower. Wendy also plays an active role with Sistahs of the Arts (SOTA) an artist's collective of African American women serving the community through exhibitions, workshops and presentations. In addition, she enjoys her work with the Greater Columbus Arts Council(GCAC) as a Lead Artist with the Art In the House(AIH) and Transit Arts programs. "These programs enable me to work with wonderful children(K-12) from the nearby community and pour into them what I've learned through my journey as an artist."

When speaking on her life and artwork, Wendy says "making art can best be described as satisfying an inner craving of my heart to create things.  Art is in my breath, my dreams, my mind, my heart and my soul." For eight years she served as a docent with the Columbus Museum of Art, where she was not only able to share her passion with local students through docent led tours but also sharpened her skills as a teaching artist. When Wendy is not creating her own artwork, she serves as Lead Artist for the Art in the House(AIH) and Transit Arts(TA) Programs, funded by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, at St. Stephen's Community House.

"Quite a bit of my art deals with the special bond that women enjoy with one another. The bond we share as mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, nieces, neighbors and sister friends.  It's about inner strength, nurturing and sharing our spiritual journey."
